What To Do While Waiting For a Tow Truck To Arrive
You have a problem with your vehicle. It could be anything from an accident to a glitch or an unexpected tire blow out. It could be a new (or new to you) car, or one you have had for quite some time. You have called a tow truck and now you are just sitting around waiting for it to show. During this period, there are several things you should do.
Park Safely
Get the car to the side of the road. If you are blocking oncoming traffic, you are risking more damage to your car, plus potentially others. If the vehicle is not drivable, it will need to be winched. Use your hazard lights to warn others. If that is not possible, use warning flares or red or brightly colored cloth as a caution.
Call the Authorities
Pull out your cell phone and call 9-1-1. They will help connect you with the right law enforcement officers. This is critical if you have been involved in an accident. Failure to report an accident has serious legal consequences. It doesn’t matter whose fault the accident was. You still need to report it. They will give you the information you will need to file an insurance claim or other documentation once this crisis is over. The police or highway authorities will also be able to help you avoid further problems while you are on the side of the road waiting for the tow company.
Remove Your Valuables
Take the time to remove anything of value or importance so that you can take them with you. This includes briefcases, garage door openers, your child’s favorite toy, or anything you might want to avoid losing. While most people are honest, it is best to not take chances. Tow companies are not responsible for the loss of personal items that are left behind. Also, you will have everything you need should repairs take a day or two.
Stay Calm and Hydrate
Try to avoid using your phone unless necessary so your battery will be as fully charged as possible since you don’t know how many other calls you may need to make. Grab a bottle of water and sip it. You are in a stressful situation and that will probably cause you to perspire more than normal. Try to slow your breathing and avoid being agitated.
Consider Staying in your Car
Avoid pacing along the road. If you are on a busy road or highway, it becomes dangerous for you to be outside where another car can strike you. If you are on a lonely road, you could startle another driver and cause them to have an accident of their own.
