What to check when your car won’t start

Here are some of the most common reasons why your car won’t start.  Begin checking here before you panic.

  • Battery

Probably one of the most common reasons a car won’t start is battery problems.  If it is clicking but not cranking, there is probably an electrical issue.  Another way to check is to turn on the windshield wipers or automatic windows since these need power from the battery to operate.  A jump may get you started, but it will be best to have the battery inspected at a reliable auto shop since it probably will need to be replaced.

  • Ignition switch

If the battery is working, check the ignition switch.  Turn on your headlights.  If they work and the battery is fine but the car still won’t start, you probably have an ignition switch issue.

  • Starter

If the battery is okay, listen for a clicking sound when you turn the key in the ignition.

  • Out of fuel

It seems obvious, but check the fuel gauge, especially if the vehicle is driven by more than one person in the household.  If you think you are out of fuel do not try and start the vehicle as it can damage your fuel pump.

  • Fuel filter

If the fuel filter is clogged, it won’t allow gas to reach the engine.  Fuel filters should be changed every 10,000 miles as part of your regular maintenance.  Next time you get your oil changed have them make a recommendation on if it needs to be changed.
